Glamour: to fool by trickery-glamour1 [ˈglӕmə] noun the often false or superficial beauty or charm which attracts What is the Jeff Boutin Experiment? The idea- I am trying to make a statement on our culture regarding our fascination with how advertising affects our desires to have the best or the latest. We wear brand names or buy products as a status symbol. We do things because other people do them or have it. Where does this impulse come from? Does it make us “ugly” as a society or is it a desire for the “beautiful”? When and how did we come to this point in our culture? MY PAINTINGS WILL REMAIN NEUTRAL REGARDING THESE QUESTIONS. The project will bring the viewers to their own conclusion. I see how this has influenced the modern world and drives the economy- television, advertising, relationships, etc. It has influenced our emotions, our morals, and our sense of what is “essentials” in life. This will be done in how I am able to present and “lead along” my audience. Only at the end will the art have meaning or understanding. Why the numbering in the paintings? The Greek word ba’sa nos means to “test by the proving stone”. The Greeks would test the purity of gold by rubbing it on a stone. In a similar way the numbers will test the quality of the Jeff Boutin Experiment. The number on the painting will correspond with the price of each piece. I believe the project as a whole and as individual pieces will be great art. It is kind of my way of exposing my inner fears to the public. Will it succeed? The project will be scrutinized and critiqued by the world, I am sure I can sell the few first pieces but will the art be able to bloom and evolve to its full potential? I guess my numbers are comparable to a model that stands in front of the class for the first time. She probably would have similar fears. Do people see her inner beauty or are the critiquing her outward appearance? At the end of the Experiment I will collect back the paintings and set up an exhibition that will travel to different museums. The art as a whole will then answer the questions that inspired the project. Jeff Boutin |
