I have entered the world and am just sharing what I have been given. I am feeding my hearts fire. Making art is essential to my well being. I have a desire to make art – beautiful or meaningful or emotive art – it is an integral sense of who I am. My desire to make art began early. In middle school I made jewelry for friends, family members and loved ones as a way to give them something truly unique and special whether it was for a birthday or holiday gift. Throughout high school and college I studied art and continued pioneering one of kind jewels for my circle of friends. Stringing beads, studying color combinations, stones and textures grew to become a therapeutic hobby and delightful past time.
After graduating from the College of Charleston with a degree in Arts Management in 1999 I decided to turn my therapeutic hobby into a small business and launched Lulus Creations, derived from a nickname my father game me as a child. Even as a little girl I played with paint, beads, wire, wood and just about anything I could get my hands on. For the past six years I have shared, showcased and refined my talents, amazing myself and others. I recently refined my business name to lisa g designs and just added custom bridal jewelry to my collection. My continued experimentation has begun to mature into expertise, confidence, and extreme enthusiasm for my work.
The materials I use range from recycled products, silver, brass and copper to semiprecious stones. In the presence of good materials, hopes grow and possibilities multiply. I am a self-taught jewelry designer, and my style evolves as I learn new skills and techniques. I currently most enjoy forging metal with a hammer and stringing with various stones and beads. My hope is that my art will be enjoyable and/or meaningful to someone, somewhere, not that I become rich selling it. I choose mediocrity over fame and fortune because I have a bigger purpose in mind. We all have the ability and the opportunity to recognize others not just for their financial successes of their work, but for the work itself.
I currently live in Charleston, SC with my two cats Calib and Jupiter. As for my other interests, I work with psychiatrists and the mentally ill population to provide and deliver innovative treatments and comprehensive support to patients living with mental illness and to the people who care for them.
So not only do I get to learn about the mind, but I also get to increase awareness of my own self and others, cope with stress, and enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of making art. Each day I continue to reach inside for my own artistry and bravery and live creatively free.
